Pedigree

Last fall, our two Afghan Hounds, Khalil and Sandy, welcomed a much-anticipated litter of ten puppies. The final puppy born experienced birth trauma and severe hypoxia, resulting in neurological damage. At first, he was not breathing, but Walter was able to resuscitate him. In those early days, we were uncertain whether he would survive. After consulting with our veterinarian, we made the decision to do everything possible to help him live a happy and meaningful life.

Because he had such a difficult beginning, we gave him a strong name: Storm.

Over the past several months, Storm has made remarkable progress. He can now hold up his head, stand on his own, run short distances unassisted, and enjoys increased mobility with the help of a doggie wheelchair. Because he does not yet have full mobility, he cannot be left home alone, so family members take turns caring for him, and he often accompanies us on outings with the other puppies.

We make sure that Storm is included in family activities and is not singled out unfairly because of his difference. While the other puppies completed beginner and intermediate training classes at PetSmart, Storm attended as an observer. The instructor was so touched by his determination that he awarded Storm an honorary certificate of completion. Walter works in the sound booth during Sunday services at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fort Myers; when no one was available to stay home with Storm, he has been able to quietly join Walter in the booth. We are deeply grateful for the kindness and flexibility shown in allowing this accommodation due to his unique circumstances.

Our pets bring comfort, companionship, and joy into our lives. Caring for Storm has continued to reminded us of the importance of showing up with compassion, patience, and love for the creatures who depend on us.
